Through the Youth Leadership Program, SUNY Plattsburgh in collaboration with Program for African Growth through Education (PAGE, Inc.) worked at enriching the experience of Francophone African youth and adults through two, three-week exchange programs. A total of 48 youth and 12 adult educators from Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger, Côte d'Ivoire, and Mauritania received training in youth leadership, civic engagement/participatory democracy, and community service on campus. This experience was made successful through the generosity of our host families, campus and Plattsburgh communities
Memorable activities included skating night at the field house, meetings with local elected officials, peer to peer interaction with local high school students and educators, sessions with local not-for-profit organizations such as Literacy Volunteers. Another high-light was visiting the North Country Underground Railroad Museum. Then they traveled to Albany, NY and Washington, D.C. They later developed and are implementing follow-on community service activities in their respective countries.
